In commemoration of the 2023 World Mental Health Day celebrations, 9mobile, Nigeria’s leading brand committed to making a positive impact, held its quarterly Health Talk Series, with a focus on substance abuse and its effects on mental health.

This edition of the series which discussed the topic “Substance Abuse: a conversation we must have now” featured leading advocate for substance abuse victims, David Folaranmi, while Dr. Damian Avar, popularly known as ‘Sabi Doctor’ served as host.

According to Folaranmi, substance addiction is a mental health illness and one of the major effects of substance abuse.

While advocating for the victims of substance abuse, he mentioned that “Treatment from drug use is not a sprint, it is an issue that requires a lot of patience.

“One of the major preventive measures we can take against substance abuse is the family preventive measure. Parents should attend seminars about how to protect their children from substance abuse.

“We have the highest prevalence of drug use in our universities. 60% of our students use drugs, hence, schools must take preventive measures against substance abuse.

“Communities can come together to curb the sale of drugs in their area, and mount streetlights in dark corners among other measures. The best help you can give to victims of substance abuse is to approach them in a non-judgmental manner and get them professional help,” Folaranmi emphasized.

“At 9mobile, we believe that mental health is a priority that deserves the same care and attention as physical health,” said Chineze Amanfo, Public Relations Lead at 9mobile.

“Through our partnership with esteemed mental health advocates and organisations, we are dedicated to making a positive impact and fostering a supportive environment where individuals feel safe to seek help and access the care they deserve.

The Health Talk Series is one of 9mobile’s CSR programs designed to highlight, simplify, and shape conversations around health issues using notable medical experts.

The series currently in its 6th edition has featured seasoned medical professionals like Dr. Maymunah Yusuf Kadiri, Dr. Kelechi Okoro, popularly known as ‘Healthertainer’, Dr. Egemba Chinonso popularly known as ‘Aproko Doctor’, Dr. Juliet Offiah and mental health advocate, Hauwa Ojeifo.
