The Council of Presidents General of Umunneochi Local Government Area has strongly condemned the ongoing crisis and alleged disruptive behaviour among members of the Umunneochi Legislative Council, warning that the trend threatens the peace, democratic integrity, and development of the area.

In a letter dated July 22, 2025, and addressed to the Leader of the Umunneochi Legislative Council, the Presidents General of the three clans that make up the LGA — Umuchieze, Isuochi, and Nneato, expressed deep concern over what they described as “distractive and unacceptable actions” by the elected councillors, particularly highlighting incidents that culminated in the events of July 17, 2025.

Signed by Chief Engr. Ochiabuto Orji, PG, Isuochi, and Secretary of the Council, the letter called on the legislators to desist from actions that project the council as a “home of lawless legislators” and urged them to embrace peace and work collaboratively with the LGA Mayor, Chief Sunday Afurobi, whose administration they openly endorsed.

“Your refusal to allow peace to reign and support the Mayor to function efficiently is tasking the sensibilities of the electorates that elected you,” the letter read, noting that the escalating tension has drawn the attention and intervention of the state governor and other stakeholders.

The Council affirmed its “unalloyed support and confidence” in the leadership of Mayor Afurobi and appealed to the councillors to prioritize governance and community development over political rivalry.

“We totally advise that you join hands with the Mayor… to bring desired dividends of democracy to the Local Government and Communities,” the Council urged.

The Presidents General warned that if peace is not restored within a reasonable time, they would be compelled to take appropriate actions “to put things in their proper perspectives.”

The Council emphasized that “once elected, the era of dirty politics should disappear for good governance,” while reaffirming their hopes that the legislators will recommit themselves to serving the people of Umunneochi with integrity and unity.

The Council of Presidents General of Umunneochi has its membership as Arc. Victor Peters Ogbukwe, JP (PG, Umuchieze), Chief George Okafor, JP (PG, Nneato), and Chief Engr. Ochiabuto Orji (PG, Isuochi).
