NITDA Lauds Tech Giants For Compliance With Online Safety Code Of Practice

The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has lauded Google, Microsoft, and TikTok for their continued compliance with the Code of Practice for Interactive Computer Service Platforms/Internet Intermediaries and for submitting their 2024 compliance reports.

The Code of Practice, jointly issued by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), and NITDA, sets out clear guidelines for promoting online safety and managing harmful content.

NITDA said on Wednesday in a statement signed by Mrs. Hadiza Umar, Director, Corporate Communications and Media Relations Department at NITDA, that the latest reports provide valuable insights into how the platforms are addressing user safety concerns in line with the Code and their respective community guidelines.

The statistics across the platforms reveal that a total of 754,629 complaints were registered, while 58,909,112 pieces of harmful content were taken down. In addition, 420,439 pieces of content were removed and later re-uploaded following user appeals, and 13,597,057 accounts were closed or deactivated.

“The submission of these reports marks a significant step towards fostering a safer and responsible digital environment for Nigerian users,” NITDA stated. “It also demonstrates the platforms’ commitment to ensuring a secure and trustworthy online environment for all.”

The agency emphasized that the achievement reflects the provisions of the Code of Practice, which mandates that large service platforms register in Nigeria, comply with relevant laws, and fulfill their tax obligations, while reinforcing their responsibility to protect Nigerian users online.

While acknowledging the efforts of the tech giants, NITDA called for continued cooperation across stakeholders. “We emphasize that building a safer digital space requires sustained collaboration and engagement among all stakeholders,” the agency said.

“We remain committed to working with industry players, civil society, and regulatory partners to further strengthen user safety measures, enhance digital literacy, and promote trust and transparency in Nigeria’s digital ecosystem.”
