The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has called on Nigerians to take personal responsibility for their online safety, as the nation joins the rest of the world to mark Cybersecurity Awareness Month.

In a statement signed by Mrs. Hadiza Umar, Director of Corporate Communications and Media Relations, NITDA noted that as the world becomes increasingly digital, daily life is now more connected than ever through phones, computers, and the internet. However, this growing connectivity also comes with rising threats from hackers, scams, and other cyber risks.

“Cyber safety begins with individual responsibility,” the agency stated, urging Nigerians to adopt simple but effective cyber hygiene practices to protect themselves and their communities.

NITDA highlighted key safety steps including the use of strong and unique passwords, enabling two-factor authentication, keeping devices and applications updated, regularly backing up data, avoiding suspicious links or attachments, and exercising caution before sharing personal or financial information online.

This year’s theme, “Cyber Hygiene for a Safer Tomorrow,” underscores that cybersecurity is not just a personal duty but a shared commitment. “When individuals protect themselves, they also safeguard their families, workplaces, and the broader digital community,” the statement added.

As part of its ongoing awareness campaign, NITDA reaffirmed its commitment to building a secure and digitally resilient Nigeria, urging citizens to “stay alert, click wisely, and stay safe online.”
