Three Years of Performance, A Future of Greater Promise

“Leadership is not about being in charge. It is about taking care of those in your charge.” — Simon Sinek

As the political landscape gradually shifts towards the 2027 elections, the people of Umunneochi State Constituency will once again be called upon to make a critical decision about their future. In moments such as this, emotions, sentiments, and political rhetoric must give way to a more fundamental question: who has truly justified the mandate entrusted to him?

For the people of Umunneochi, the answer is becoming increasingly evident.

Three years ago, Hon. Mathias Ume, fondly known as Nwachi, stepped into the Abia State House of Assembly carrying the hopes and aspirations of thousands of constituents. From the very first day in office, he set out with a clear vision—to be a strong and effective voice for Ndi Umunneochi and to use the instrumentality of legislation, advocacy, and strategic partnerships to improve the lives of his people.

Today, his stewardship offers a compelling story of purposeful representation, visionary leadership, and measurable development.

As the renowned American statesman John Quincy Adams once said, “If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.”

By this standard, Hon. Mathias Ume has earned his place among the emerging generation of transformational leaders in Abia State.

A Representative Who Chose Action Over Excuses

One of the greatest tests of leadership is the ability to confront challenges directly rather than merely lament them.

When insecurity became a major concern in Umunneochi, Hon. Ume did not wait for another day. On the very first sitting day of the 8th Abia State House of Assembly, he moved a motion drawing urgent attention to the worsening security situation in the constituency.

That bold legislative intervention became one of the catalysts for the security response that eventually led to the establishment of Operation Crush and the restoration of peace in many parts of Umunneochi.

True leaders understand that security is the foundation upon which every other form of development rests. Without peace, schools cannot function effectively, businesses cannot thrive, and communities cannot prosper.

His proactive approach demonstrated courage, responsiveness, and an unwavering commitment to the welfare of his constituents.

A Legislator Making Laws That Matter

Legislation remains one of the most powerful tools for social transformation, and Hon. Mathias Ume has used that tool effectively.

His legislative footprint reflects a lawmaker focused not on publicity but on impact. Through the sponsorship of landmark bills such as the Abia State Forest Guard Corps Bill, the Homeland Security Bill, the Senior Citizens Welfare Bill, the Consolidated Revenue Collection Bill, the Paternity Leave Bill for Male Civil Servants, and the Bill for the Establishment of Technical and Vocational Schools, he has consistently demonstrated an understanding of the pressing needs of modern society.

These legislative initiatives speak volumes about his priorities. They reveal a leader concerned about security, youth empowerment, economic growth, family welfare, workforce productivity, and social protection.

Beyond sponsoring bills, he has remained one of the most vocal and active contributors on the floor of the House, ensuring that the concerns of Umunneochi are heard wherever critical decisions affecting the state are made.

As former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill famously noted, “The price of greatness is responsibility.” Hon. Ume has embraced that responsibility with remarkable dedication.

Building the Future Through Education

Nelson Mandela once described education as “the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” Few leaders appreciate this truth better than Hon. Mathias Ume.

Across Umunneochi, educational infrastructure has witnessed unprecedented attention under his representation. Numerous primary and secondary schools have benefited from construction, renovation, reconstruction, and rehabilitation projects. Communities that previously struggled with dilapidated learning environments are gradually witnessing a transformation that restores dignity to teaching and learning.

Yet, his commitment goes beyond bricks and mortar.

Recognising that many brilliant students face financial barriers to education, Hon. Ume awarded scholarships to more than 300 students. He also established a bursary programme that has supported dozens of undergraduates across higher institutions in Nigeria, with plans already underway to expand the programme to more beneficiaries.

His intervention in the payment of WAEC and NECO registration fees for students across several secondary schools has lifted a heavy burden from countless families. Additional support for JAMB registration has further strengthened access to educational opportunities for young people aspiring to higher education.

In every sense, he has invested not merely in schools but in the future of Umunneochi.

Connecting Communities Through Infrastructure

Development follows roads.

Roads connect farmers to markets, patients to hospitals, children to schools, and businesses to opportunities. They are the arteries through which economic life flows.

Understanding this reality, Hon. Mathias Ume has championed one of the most ambitious road infrastructure drives witnessed in the constituency in recent times.

From the Amuda-Lokpanta Road to the Mbala-Umuaku-Ngodo Road, from the reconstruction of the Lekwesi-Leru Road to the rehabilitation of strategic ring roads and bridge projects across communities, his interventions have significantly expanded connectivity throughout Umunneochi.

Many of these projects are already completed, others are ongoing, while additional projects are at various stages of implementation.

What distinguishes these interventions is their strategic value. They are opening rural communities, stimulating economic activities, reducing transportation challenges, and creating new opportunities for commerce and investment.

As former Singaporean leader Lee Kuan Yew observed, “The task of the leader is to get his people from where they are to where they have not been.” That journey is becoming visible across Umunneochi.

Leveraging Influence for Greater Development

Effective representation is not measured solely by projects directly funded through constituency allocations. It is also measured by a representative’s ability to attract external investments and interventions.

In this regard, Hon. Ume has excelled.

Through sustained engagement with the Niger Delta Development Commission, he facilitated the first phase of solar streetlight installations covering 932 poles across communities in Umunneochi. This initiative promises to improve security, stimulate night-time economic activities, and enhance the overall quality of life.

His engagement with the leadership of the NDDC also resulted in the approval process for the rehabilitation and renovation of thirty-nine schools across the constituency.

These achievements underscore an important reality: development comes to communities whose representatives know how to engage institutions, build partnerships, and advocate effectively.

Improving Access to Quality Healthcare

A healthy population is the foundation of a productive society.

Recognising this, Hon. Ume has facilitated the construction, renovation, equipping, fencing, and provision of water facilities in nineteen healthcare centres spread across the constituency.

From Ngodo to Ubahu, from Leru to Mbala, healthcare facilities that once struggled with inadequate infrastructure are receiving renewed attention.

For expectant mothers, elderly citizens, children, and vulnerable families, these interventions are not simply projects; they are lifelines.

Healthcare development may not always generate political headlines, but it often has the most profound impact on people’s lives.

Empowering People, Not Just Building Projects

Perhaps the true measure of leadership lies not in structures but in people.

Throughout his tenure, Hon. Mathias Ume has consistently demonstrated a human-centred approach to governance.

He facilitated employment opportunities for qualified constituents in the education sector. He helped secure grants for entrepreneurs and small business owners. He supported farmers through agricultural programmes, training opportunities, and access to critical farm inputs. He intervened in the payment of medical bills, school fees, and welfare support for vulnerable individuals and families.

These interventions may not always make front-page headlines, but they have changed lives.

And ultimately, leadership is about people.

The Case for Continuity

There is a reason experienced democracies value continuity where performance is evident.

Development is not achieved overnight. Roads take time. Educational reforms require consistency. Healthcare improvements need sustained investment. Youth empowerment programmes yield their greatest results when allowed to mature.

Many of the projects initiated or facilitated by Hon. Mathias Ume are still progressing through various stages of implementation. Several opportunities currently being pursued for the constituency require continuity to reach full fruition.

To interrupt this momentum would be to slow a development trajectory that is already producing visible results.

As Ronald Reagan once remarked, “The greatest leader is not necessarily the one who does the greatest things. He is the one who gets people to do the greatest things.”

By mobilising government institutions, development partners, community leaders, and stakeholders around a common vision for Umunneochi, Hon. Ume has demonstrated precisely that kind of leadership.

The Verdict Belongs to the People

As the people of Umunneochi prepare to chart the next phase of their political journey, they must carefully weigh performance against promises, evidence against speculation, and results against rhetoric.

Who stood up when insecurity threatened the peace of the constituency?

Who sponsored laws designed to improve the lives of citizens?

Who brought educational opportunities closer to the people?

Who attracted development projects to communities?

Who invested in roads, healthcare, youth empowerment, and human capital development?

Who has remained accessible, accountable, and responsive?

The answers to these questions tell a story that cannot be ignored.

The story is that of a representative who has spent three years turning campaign promises into measurable progress.

The story is that of a leader whose record speaks louder than political slogans.

The story is that of Hon. Mathias Ume.

As Umunneochi looks towards 2027, the choice before the people is not merely about electing a representative. It is about deciding whether to consolidate progress or start afresh.

The achievements of the last three years provide compelling evidence that continuity will serve the constituency better.

For a people determined to deepen development, strengthen representation, and secure greater opportunities for future generations, returning Hon. Mathias Ume to the Abia State House of Assembly in 2027 may not simply be a political choice—it may well be the logical next step in the march towards a more prosperous Umunneochi.

Three years and more of proven performance. Four more years of greater possibilities.
