For many students, surviving lectures, assignments, and examinations is demanding enough. For Ojeogu Chinazaekpere Clara, a student of the Nigerian Institute of Journalism (NIJ) from Umuahia South Local Government Area of Abia State, academic life is only one part of a much bigger story.

Away from the classroom, Clara has quietly carved a niche for herself as a self-taught content creator, videographer, video editor, and social media manager. Armed with determination, creativity and an unwavering commitment to learning, she has transformed simple ideas into viral TikTok content that has amassed millions of views and inspired students in higher institutions across Nigeria.

Her journey is a testament to the power of consistency, resilience and self-belief, proving that one does not need expensive equipment or formal training to make an impact in today’s digital economy.

A Passion Born Behind the Camera

Clara’s journey into content creation did not begin with ambitions of internet fame. Rather, it started with a simple act of helping her elder sister.

At the time, her sister was pursuing opportunities in modelling and needed a video for an application. With nothing more than an iPhone 6 and an interest in photography, Clara volunteered to shoot, edit and compile the video.

The result exceeded expectations. From that moment, she became her sister’s unofficial videographer, unknowingly taking the first step into what would become an exciting creative journey.

Finding the Confidence to Share Her Work

Despite developing impressive photography and editing skills, Clara initially struggled with putting her work in the public domain.

The turning point came through encouragement from her best friend, who constantly reminded her that she possessed valuable creative skills that deserved to be seen.

That encouragement eventually paid off when she began creating and posting videos for one of her coursemates, Aniya. The positive response and growing engagement convinced her that her work resonated with audiences and deserved a wider platform.

Building a Diverse Creative Portfolio

Today, Clara’s creative interests extend far beyond personal videos. She enjoys producing advertising content for brands, covering events, and participating in trending TikTok challenges. Alongside her personal projects, she also manages social media accounts for clients, helping them build stronger digital visibility and grow their online communities.

Her versatility has become one of her greatest strengths, allowing her to combine storytelling, visual creativity, and digital marketing into a single skill set.

When Ordinary Videos Become Viral Sensations

Like many creators, Clara’s breakthrough came unexpectedly. Her first viral video—a humorous photography-themed makeup skit posted on her class TikTok page, @diploma.dynamos1—recorded an impressive 245,000 views and 27,700 likes.

But an even bigger milestone was just around the corner. A follow-up video exploded online, attracting an astonishing 3.9 million views and over 704,900 likes.

Beyond the impressive numbers, what delighted Clara most was seeing students from several higher institutions recreate the trend, turning a classroom project into a nationwide campus phenomenon.

Learning Without a Classroom

One remarkable aspect of Clara’s success is that virtually every technical skill she possesses has been acquired independently.

From video editing to photography and visual storytelling, she taught herself through practice, experimentation, and continuous learning.

Her confidence has grown to the point where she now envisions herself teaching photography and content creation to aspiring creatives in the future.

Juggling Creativity and Campus Life

While content creation offers exciting opportunities, balancing it with the rigorous demands of journalism school has not been easy.

Clara admits that the pressure can be overwhelming. Brands frequently approach her for influencer campaigns, many of which come with strict deadlines. Unfortunately, academic commitments sometimes prevent her from delivering on schedule, costing her potentially lucrative opportunities.

To cope, she reserves most of her shoots for weekends and Mondays. Occasionally, when an assignment is particularly rewarding, she reluctantly sacrifices a lecture to meet a client’s expectations.

For her, it is simply part of the hustle required to build a career while pursuing a degree.

Working Through Limitations

Perhaps Clara’s greatest challenge is one shared by many young Nigerian creatives—limited access to quality equipment. Ironically, despite producing content viewed by millions, she currently does not own a high-end smartphone capable of consistently delivering the quality she desires. Instead, she often borrows better phones from classmates whenever she needs to shoot professional-grade content.

Equipment, however, is not her only obstacle. She has also had to contend with critics who accuse her of seeking attention or trying too hard.

Choosing Resilience Over Negativity

Rather than allowing criticism to discourage her, Clara has developed a mindset rooted in resilience. Interestingly, she says she rarely encounters negativity directly online. Instead, most criticism comes through anonymous messages or whispered conversations on campus.

One anonymous critic even labelled her a “hungry journalist.” But rather than becoming discouraged, she simply showed up the next day with her camera, ready to create more content. To protect her peace of mind, Clara prefers working independently, refusing to allow envy or unnecessary distractions to derail her focus.

More Than a Hobby

Although she currently describes content creation as a hobby, Clara acknowledges that it is gradually evolving into something much bigger. What started as a leisure activity has already become a source of income, with brands paying for collaborations and content production. As opportunities continue to grow, she sees a future in which content creation becomes a full-time profession.

Advice for Aspiring Student Creators

Drawing from her own experience, Clara believes the biggest investment any aspiring creator can make is in learning practical skills. She encourages beginners to master the fundamentals—particularly video editing—before worrying about expensive equipment.

She also advises young creatives not to be afraid of asking questions or seeking guidance from more experienced practitioners. Even without the resources to pay for formal training, she believes determination and the willingness to learn can take aspiring creators remarkably far. Above all, she urges students to remain consistent, make the most of whatever resources they have, and continually improve their craft.

A Generation Creating Opportunity

In an era where smartphones have become tools of entrepreneurship and social media has created entirely new career paths, Clara’s story reflects the growing wave of Nigerian students transforming creativity into opportunity.

From shooting videos with an ageing iPhone 6 to producing content watched by millions, her journey demonstrates that talent, persistence, and continuous learning often matter more than perfect equipment.

For Clara, every viral video is more than just another online success—it is another step towards building a future powered by creativity, resilience and digital innovation.
