Abia State is set to make history as the administration of Governor Alex Otti prepares to launch Nigeria’s first state-driven Electric Vehicle (EV) public transport system, a bold move designed to revolutionise mobility and promote environmental sustainability.
According to a statement by Ctz. Ukoha, Njoku Ukoha, Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, the initiative, known as the Abia Green Shuttle Service, is part of Governor Otti’s broader vision to establish a modern, efficient, and eco-friendly public transportation network in the state.
“The Abia Green Shuttle Service aligns with global best practices in sustainable transportation and the fight against climate change. The State under Governor Otti has embraced the future over and above PMS, diesel and CNG,” the statement noted.
Under the scheme, the State Government plans to acquire 100 electric buses that will operate across the three major cities of Aba, Umuahia, and Ohafia, with modern terminals currently under construction.
The first batch of 20 electric buses, alongside 10 charging stations equipped with accessibility features for persons with disabilities, is expected to become operational before the end of the year. A second batch of another 20 buses with additional charging infrastructure is expected early next year.
In preparation for the rollout, the government is completing modern bus stops in Aba and Umuahia to ensure commuters enjoy safe, comfortable, and efficient transport services. Routes are also being finalised for seamless operation.
The project is designed to reduce dependence on grid electricity through the use of solar power and battery storage systems, enhance road safety through the introduction of designated bus stops, and create new jobs to stimulate the state’s economy.
Governor Otti’s sustainable transport plan, the statement added, “demonstrates a strong commitment to modernising transportation, promoting environmental responsibility, and improving the quality of life for Abia residents.”
