The Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON) has said that the nationwide temporary disruption of SIM-related services across all mobile networks, is as a result of an ongoing migration to the National Identity Management Commission’s (NIMC) new identity verification platform.

According to a statement jointly signed by ALTON Chairman, Engr. Gbenga Adebayo, and Publicity Secretary, Barr. Damian Udeh, the disruption is a result of a recent directive from NIMC, which mandates all Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) to transition to a new digital identity authentication system.

Digital TimesNG understands that the platform is designed to enhance the integrity and efficiency of identity management processes in the country.

However, the migration has triggered unforeseen technical challenges, directly affecting real-time identity verification functions required for SIM registration, SIM replacement, Mobile Number Portability (MNP), and other related services.

“During this period, MNOs will not be able to support SIM swaps, SIM replacements, activation of new subscribers, and other SIM-related transactions,” ALTON said in the statement and emphasized that while the intent of the new platform is progressive, the transition has inadvertently interrupted service delivery.

The association assured subscribers and stakeholders that its member companies are working closely with the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), NIMC, and other regulatory agencies to resolve the integration issues as quickly as possible.

“We understand the inconvenience this may cause to millions of subscribers who depend on these services for communication, business, and daily activities. We sincerely apologize for the disruption and kindly advice subscribers to postpone visits to service centres for SIM-related transactions until further notice,” the statement added.

ALTON pledged to provide timely updates as the situation evolves and reaffirmed its commitment to delivering secure, reliable, and high-quality telecommunications services. The association also appreciated the patience and understanding of the Nigerian public during this transition period.
