The Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON) has expressed its support for the Lagos State Infrastructure Maintenance and Regulatory Agency (LASIMRA) as it commences the enumeration of communication towers and masts across Lagos State.
The exercise, announced by LASIMRA’s General Manager/Chief Executive Officer, Prince Oyekanmi Elegushi, on January 24, 2025, aims to create a comprehensive database of all communication towers in Lagos.
Digital TimesNG reports that the project is expected to enhance regulatory oversight, address public safety concerns, and dispel misconceptions that all communication towers belong to network operators.
ALTON said in a statement jointly signed by Engr. Gbenga Adebayo and Gbolahan Awonuga, Chairman and Executive Secretary respectively, that the initiative will clarify ownership distinctions between telecom operators and other entities such as broadcasting companies, government agencies, financial institutions, and security organizations.
“By identifying abandoned or structurally unsafe towers, the project will improve infrastructure management and ensure compliance with safety regulations,” ALTON said in the statement.
Endorsed by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and supported by ALTON members, the Lagos City Mast and Tower Enumeration Project demonstrates the industry’s commitment to proactive risk management and self-regulation.
ALTON emphasized that this initiative aligns with the goal of maintaining a secure and sustainable telecom infrastructure while fostering collaboration with regulators and stakeholders.
ALTON urged all relevant parties to support the enumeration exercise, highlighting its importance for public safety, environmental sustainability, and regulatory compliance.
The association reaffirmed its commitment to working with the Lagos State Government, LASIMRA, and other stakeholders to ensure the success of the project, which is expected to serve as a model for similar initiatives in other Nigerian cities in the future.
