As the people of Umunneochi Local Government Area (LGA) reflect on the first 100 days of Chief Sunday Nduka Afurobi’s tenure as Mayor, one thing is clear: his leadership has ushered in a new era of transformation, commitment, and action. From infrastructure development to economic empowerment and security, Mayor Afurobi has translated his campaign promises into visible and impactful changes.

A Vision For Progress

Before his election on November 2, 2024, Afurobi, then the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) candidate, articulated an ambitious plan to revitalize Umunneochi. His pledges focused on ensuring that every local government fund was utilized for the people’s benefit, addressing power infrastructure, improving access to potable water, and enhancing security in continuation of his predecessor’s efforts.

He also committed to extensive road rehabilitation, cash crop development to stimulate the local economy, support for farmers with high-yield seedlings, and comprehensive youth empowerment programmes encompassing education, healthcare, and skills acquisition. His core promise was clear: to engage directly with community members to understand their challenges and deliver solutions that impact their daily lives.

From the moment he assumed office on November 4, 2024, Mayor Afurobi wasted no time in setting the wheels of progress in motion. His administration immediately rolled out a short-term development agenda, prioritizing infrastructure, security, economic revitalization, and community welfare.

Recognizing the need for a stable electricity supply, Mayor Afurobi has embarked on a drive to repair vandalized transformers and install new ones across the LGA. Steady electricity supply has already been restored in several areas, with intensified efforts to energize Umuchieze.

Infrastructure And Road Development

One of the Mayor’s first major initiatives was the commencement of Phase 1 of the grading of rural feeder roads in December 2024. Under this project, at least ten major roads, including Afor Umuaku Umudi-Amaeke Road, Eke Isuochi-Achara Road, Umukparo Road, and Orie Ngodo-Obinulo-Ndiawa Road, were given facelifts, while the collapsed Umuokpara Bridge in Achara is currently being reconstructed, set for completion within 21 days from commencement of work.

The Mayor assured residents that all roads would eventually receive attention, emphasizing the use of local labour to create job opportunities during the festive season. Additionally, the construction of the Mbala–Umuaku–Ngodo road by the Abia State Government finally commenced, having met all necessary requirements.

Power And Water Supply Restoration

Security remains a top priority for the administration. The Mayor has strengthened collaborations with security agencies and local vigilante groups to tackle crime and protect public infrastructure.
