MTN has paid a heartfelt tribute to its MTN Nigeria founding Chairman, Dr. Pascal Gabriel Dozie, following his recent passing, describing him as a visionary leader, pioneer, and a stabilising force who played a pivotal role in shaping Nigeria’s telecommunications landscape.
In an official statement, MTN expressed deep sadness at the loss, extending condolences to Dr. Dozie’s family, friends, and associates.
Describing him as a titan of industry and statesman, the company highlighted his foundational influence on MTN Nigeria’s journey and his enduring legacy of leadership and service.
Dr. Dozie served as Chairman of MTN Nigeria from its inception in 2001 until 2019. Under his leadership, the company not only established its presence in Nigeria but also grew to become a major force in Africa’s telecom sector.
He was instrumental in securing early support and investment, and on May 16, 2001, he made the first official call on the MTN network — a historic milestone in Nigeria’s mobile telecommunications history.
Karl Toriola, CEO of MTN Nigeria, praised Dr. Dozie’s unwavering belief in Nigeria’s potential. “His leadership laid the foundation for our success, and his legacy will continue to guide us in the years to come,” he said.
During his 18-year tenure, Dr. Dozie championed strong corporate governance, long-term value creation, and social impact.
Notable contributions under his leadership included the incorporation of the MTN Nigeria Foundation in 2004, the launch of one of Africa’s largest switching centres in 2010, critical leadership during regulatory challenges in 2015, the introduction of Africa’s first 3G feature phone in 2018, and MTN Nigeria’s listing on the premium board of the Nigerian Exchange in 2019.
Ralph Mupita, President and CEO of MTN Group, also paid tribute, noting that Dr. Dozie’s visionary leadership was crucial to the group’s expansion into Nigeria. “His commitment to excellence and integrity set a standard that we continue to uphold,” Mupita said.
Beyond telecommunications, Dr. Dozie’s influence spanned banking, education, and public service. He founded Diamond Bank, led the Nigerian Economic Summit Group, and served as a Director at the Central Bank of Nigeria.
Known fondly as PGD, he was the recipient of national honours including Officer and Commander of the Order of the Niger (OON and CON).
Dr. Dozie was remembered not only for his achievements but also for his character. Warm, principled, and humble, he was widely respected and admired. MTN described him as a “quiet revolutionary” who led with grace, clarity, and conviction.
“We are profoundly grateful for his time with us. His memory will remain a guiding light for MTN, Nigeria’s business community, and everyone who shares his unwavering commitment to progress built on integrity and service,” the statement concluded.
