The Nigerian media industry is reeling in shock following the brutal killing of ARISE Television anchor, Somtochukwu ‘Sommie’ Maduagwu, who was murdered by armed robbers during an early Monday morning attack at her residence in Katampe, Abuja.

Maduagwu, fondly called “Sommie” by colleagues, was just 29 years old. She was not only a promising broadcaster whose vibrant voice connected with millions of viewers, but also a trained lawyer described by many as professional, supportive, and deeply compassionate.

In a statement signed by Hadiza Usman-Ajayi on behalf of ARISE News management, the organisation expressed devastation at the loss: “Sommie was not only a cherished member of the ARISE News family but also a vibrant voice that engaged and connected with our viewers.

“We extend our deepest condolences to her parents, siblings, extended family, friends, and loved ones at this difficult time. Her voice is now silent, but her spirit, passion and legacy will endure as part of our collective memory. We remain in shock and call for a speedy investigation, apprehension, and prosecution of the culprits.”

The Nigeria Police has since launched an intensive investigation. The Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, Ajao Adewale, has directed tactical units, including the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, Special Intelligence Unit, and crime scene experts, to take over the case.

Confirming the development, FCT Police spokesperson, Josephine Adeh, said the command was leaving no stone unturned to ensure justice is served.

The Divisional Police Officer for Katampe, CSP Sadiq Abubakar, also confirmed that preliminary investigations had begun into the robbery incident.

Police sources disclosed that Maduagwu lived alone in Katampe, while her parents reside in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

Her tragic death has sparked outrage among colleagues, friends, and viewers alike, with many calling for urgent reforms in security to protect citizens from rising violent crimes in the nation’s capital.

As tributes continue to pour in, Somtochukwu Maduagwu is being remembered as a rising star whose life and career were cut short in the most heartbreaking way.
