Mourners flood Nnorie community as hundreds gather to pay last respects to beloved legal luminary
By Chris URUAKPA
A wave of grief swept through Umuakashe village in Nnorie, Ngor Okpalla Local Government Area of Imo State, as hundreds gathered to pay their last respects to the late Barrister Aloy Chiagorom Abarah, who was laid to rest amid an outpouring of sorrow and heartfelt tributes on Wednesday.
The atmosphere was heavy with mourning from the moment mourners began arriving at his family compound. Somber faces filled the entrance of both the St. James Catholic Church, Nnorie and the family house, each person carrying the weight of a devastating loss.
A Village in Mourning
The funeral proceedings began with a requiem Mass on Tuesday, held at his family residence. Women from the Umuakashe community sang traditional dirge songs, echoing their collective grief and honouring a man who was deeply loved.
By Wednesday morning, a quiet pall settled over the village as residents awaited the lying-in-state of one of their most esteemed sons. The stillness in the air was a reflection of the pain shared by many.
The arrival of the funeral convoy from the morgue drew widespread attention, not just for its length, but also for the solemnity it carried. The sight of the ambulance transporting Barr. Abarah’s remains left many in silent reflection, as people lined the streets in tribute.
A Farewell Fit for a Statesman
By 10:30 a.m., mourners had filled St. James Catholic Church in Nnorie, Ngor-Okpala to capacity. Many had no choice but to remain outside, braving the elements just to be part of the final farewell. When the hearse pulled into the church premises, tears flowed freely as some mourners cried uncontrollably.
During the funeral Mass, the officiating priest described Barr. Abarah as a man of the people whose impact would not be forgotten. “We have not come to bury Aloy; to do so is to concede victory to death. But Jesus Christ has conquered death,” he said. He urged mourners to be comforted by the rich legacy Barr. Abarah left behind — one of service, justice, and compassion.
A Life Remembered
Friends, colleagues, family members, and associates came from near and far to honor a man they described as generous, principled, and compassionate. Many described him as a friend to all, someone who touched lives without seeking anything in return. The funeral cortege that accompanied his remains from the church to his final resting place spoke volumes about his influence.
On the way back from the church, one villager expressed the community’s shared sense of devastation: “This loss is shocking beyond comprehension. We’ve lost more than a man; we’ve lost a pillar.”
At exactly 1:47 p.m., Barrister Aloy Chiagorom Abarah was laid to rest in his family compound, leaving behind a legacy of love, service, and dedication to his people.
A Legacy That Lives On
Mourners reflected on the fragility of life and the enduring power of living meaningfully. “Life is not about a million years,” one mourner said. “Even if we live for just one hour, let it be impactful. Barr. Abarah did just that.”
As the sun set over Umuakashe, the community bid farewell to a man whose life was defined by compassion, service, and integrity.
May his soul, and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.
