Dr. Nkemakolam Obinna Eke, an Isuochi-born Canadian-based medical practitioner, has achieved a remarkable milestone with his election as a Councillor in the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA), Canada.
The CPSA, a regulatory body over a century old, oversees the practice of medicine in Alberta. It issues practice permits to physicians, monitors professional standards, and ensures that doctors across the province are qualified to deliver the highest quality of care to patients.
A Family Physician based in Edmonton with over two decades of clinical experience (more than half of which has been in Canada), Dr. Eke also serves as a Clinical Associate Professor of Family Medicine at the University of Alberta’s Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry. He is the Medical Director of PrimeCare Clinic of Terwillegar, a multi-specialty and multidisciplinary health facility.
Beyond his clinical duties, Dr. Eke is the Deputy Editor of the CANPAD Medical Journal and a CPSA Assessor for practice-ready physicians. His extensive leadership experience, both in Canada and Nigeria, has shaped him into a respected voice in the medical community.
“My leadership journey in Canada includes serving as a member and chair of several professional, hospital, and regional health committees—roles that strengthened my ability to collaborate with diverse teams, address challenges strategically, and align with organizational goals,” Dr. Eke stated while announcing his interest in the councillorship seat.
Before relocating to Canada, Dr. Eke held various leadership and editorial positions in Nigeria, including Speaker of the Medical Students’ Association, Secretary General of the Association of Resident Doctors, Member of the Expanded Executive of the National Association of Resident Doctors, Associate Editor of the Nigerian Journal of Medicine, and Editor-in-Chief of the Afrimedic Journal.
A prince and son of His Royal Highness, Eze Sam Eke (Obasi II) of Umuobasi Autonomous Community, Mbala, Isuochi, in Umunneochi Local Government Area of Abia State, Dr. Eke began his medical career in Nigeria as an Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, specializing in Reproductive Endocrinology and Assisted Reproduction.
An alumnus of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka (Nnewi Campus), he previously served as a physician at Dx Medical Centres and the Saskatchewan Health Authority. He was also a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at Federal Medical Centre, Keffi, Nasarawa State, and a Resident Doctor at Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital, Nnewi, before relocating to Canada.
Since his relocation, Dr. Eke has practiced extensively as a Family Physician with obstetrics, providing care across rural, urban, and Indigenous communities. His practice spans family medicine clinics, rural emergency and surgical services, inpatient and long-term care, obstetric delivery, and First Nations health centres.
Health analysts describe his broad professional exposure as one that gives him “a unique and empathetic understanding of the challenges and rewards of medical practice across diverse healthcare systems.”
“With a strong commitment to inclusive leadership, medical ethics, professional standards, and physician advocacy, I believe I am well equipped to serve as a CPSA Councillor,” Dr. Eke affirmed during his campaign.
“Together, we can strengthen our profession and serve Albertans with excellence.”
Dr. Eke’s election into the CPSA Council not only marks a personal achievement but also stands as a source of pride for the Isuochi and Abia State communities, as well as the wider Nigerian diaspora excelling in global medical leadership.
