The Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP) has expressed deep sadness over the death of its former President and publisher of The Eagle Online, Dotun Oladipo, who died on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, at the age of 56.
Oladipo served as President of GOCOP from 2017 to 2021 and was among the publishers who played significant roles in shaping the Guild during its formative years.
His death, the Guild said, represents a major loss not only to GOCOP but also to the wider Nigerian media industry.
Oladipo brought extensive experience from the traditional media to online publishing. Before establishing himself in the digital space, he worked as a journalist and editor, gaining valuable experience in reporting, newsroom operations and media management.
He later became publisher of The Eagle Online at a time when digital journalism was still evolving in Nigeria.
As online platforms increasingly became important sources of news and information, Oladipo was among the media professionals who recognised the need for online publishers to collaborate, share knowledge and establish standards for the emerging industry.
His involvement coincided with the growth of GOCOP from an association of online publishers into a more structured professional body with an increasingly visible presence in Nigeria’s media landscape.
As President from 2017 to 2021, Oladipo devoted considerable attention to the affairs of the Guild, representing the organisation at various engagements and working with members to address the opportunities and challenges arising from the rapid expansion of digital publishing.
Speaking on his death, GOCOP President, Danlami Nmodu, described the development as painful and said Oladipo’s contributions to the Guild would remain memorable.
“Dotun played an important role in the development of GOCOP. He led the Guild for four years at a time when there was still a lot of work to be done to establish online publishers as an important part of the media. His contribution will always be remembered,” Nmodu said.
He added that Oladipo brought both his journalistic experience and understanding of the publishing business to the leadership of the Guild.
“Dotun understood journalism and he understood the business of publishing. He was passionate about the place of online media in Nigeria and he gave his time to the growth of the Guild. We are saddened by his passing,” Nmodu said.
Oladipo’s journalism career began long before online publishing emerged as a dominant channel for news consumption. His years in the mainstream media provided him with a strong foundation in journalism and prepared him for the transition into digital publishing as the internet began reshaping the Nigerian media industry.
Through The Eagle Online, he became part of a new generation of publishers who embraced digital platforms and helped expand the reach of journalism beyond traditional media outlets.
His years of leadership in GOCOP also came during a period of rapid transformation in the media industry, marked by the emergence of numerous online news platforms and the growing influence of social media in how stories were produced, distributed and consumed.
The Guild said Oladipo’s contribution should be viewed against this backdrop, particularly his role in strengthening collaboration among online publishers and advancing the professional standing of digital journalism.
Even after leaving office as President, GOCOP said Oladipo remained interested in the affairs of the organisation and maintained cordial relationships with publishers and colleagues across the country.
The Guild extended its condolences to his family, the management and staff of The Eagle Online, and his friends and colleagues across the media industry.
GOCOP said it would continue to engage with his family and associates on appropriate plans to honour his memory and recognise his contributions to the development of online publishing in Nigeria.
