- NITDA launched the Innovation Hub in Abuja to transform NYSC members into digital entrepreneurs and solution providers through mentorship, training in emerging technologies, and innovation support.
- NYSC is advancing its own digital transformation, including fully digitised ID systems and potential nationwide adoption of corps-developed technology solutions.
The National Information Technology Development Agency has unveiled a dedicated innovation hub designed to equip National Youth Service Corps members with the skills and opportunities needed to become technology entrepreneurs and solution providers rather than traditional job seekers.
The newly commissioned NITDA Innovation Space, located at the agency’s headquarters in Abuja, represents a strategic effort to address Nigeria’s growing youth unemployment challenge by leveraging digital innovation and entrepreneurship.
Speaking at the launch, NITDA Director General, Kashifu Inuwa, said the initiative reflects the realities of a rapidly evolving global economy where employability increasingly depends on digital competence, innovation, and strategic career planning.
“The world is changing fast. Many of the jobs we see today did not exist decades ago. If you want to succeed, you must build relevant skills and have a clear career strategy,” Inuwa said.
He noted that between 3.5 million and 4 million young Nigerians enter the labour market annually, placing enormous pressure on conventional employment structures and making innovation-driven job creation an urgent national priority.
“Our goal is simple: before you leave here, you should either have built a business or created something valuable enough to earn you a place in the ecosystem,” he added.
Drawing from his own NYSC experience, Inuwa recounted how a personal project he undertook during service in 2004—building a website with his allowance—secured him a ₦1.5 million contract that launched his professional career. According to him, visibility and practical problem-solving are key to success in today’s economy.
The Director General of the National Youth Service Corps, Brigadier General Olakunle Oluseye Nafiu, described the initiative as a model for youth empowerment and national development.
“We don’t just post corps members for service; we post them to add value and to be developed. What is happening here at NITDA is exactly what the country needs,” Nafiu said.
He praised participating corps members for developing market-ready digital solutions and emphasised that the programme reinforces the relevance of the NYSC scheme in a technology-driven era.
“The youths we deploy are not just serving; they are solution providers,” he stated.
Nafiu also disclosed that NYSC is undergoing broader digital reforms, including the full digitisation of corps members’ ID cards beginning with the 2026 Batch A Stream One, allowing access through digital dashboards.
He further expressed interest in adopting one of the digital solutions developed at NITDA for nationwide Place of Primary Assignment verification and management.
During the commissioning, corps members showcased innovative products, including the Smart ID Management System and the NYSC Corps360 application, designed to improve identity management, operational coordination, and service efficiency.
One of the innovators, Ruth Mmachi Owana Jack, explained that her team’s Smart ID solution was developed to address persistent institutional inefficiencies in identity management, such as multiple physical cards, outdated records, and security concerns.
“Our solution combines mobile and web applications with a unified smart card that supports secure identification, real-time updates, and seamless interaction,” she said.
NITDA has consistently integrated about 700 corps members annually into its operations, using this opportunity to provide structured mentorship, training in emerging technologies, and innovation support through its Idea to Impact programme.
By repositioning the NYSC service year as a pipeline for entrepreneurship and digital problem-solving, NITDA is aligning national service with President Bola Tinubu’s broader agenda for youth economic empowerment and digital transformation.
The launch of the Innovation Space marks a significant shift in Nigeria’s approach to national service—transforming it from a routine transitional period into a platform for innovation, enterprise, and long-term economic relevance.
