Nigeria’s maritime industry has recorded another significant milestone as the Maritime Centre of Excellence (MCOE), the flagship maritime training, research, and competence development institution of NLNG Ship Management Limited (NSML), has secured international certification from the UK Nautical Institute.
Announcing the achievement during a press conference, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of NSML, Abdulkadir K. Ahmed, described the certification as a landmark accomplishment not only for NSML but also for Nigeria’s maritime sector.
According to him, the recognition underscores the growing capacity of Nigeria to deliver maritime training and professional development that meets the highest global standards.
Established as a one-stop hub for maritime expertise, the Maritime Centre of Excellence operates from Bonny Island, Rivers State, serving Nigeria, West Africa, and the wider global maritime community. Equipped with cutting-edge simulators and modern training facilities, the Centre has become a leading institution for maritime education, competence development, research, and consultancy services.
International Recognition Built on Quality and Excellence
The latest certification from the UK Nautical Institute represents a significant endorsement of the Centre’s commitment to quality, operational excellence, and competence development. The certification confirms that the MCOE meets internationally accepted standards for maritime training and professional development.
For NSML, however, this achievement is part of a broader journey of excellence. The Centre had previously secured accreditation from DNV under globally recognised standards, including ISO 9001:2015 for Quality Management Systems and DNV-ST-0029 standards for Maritime Simulator and Training Centres. These accreditations have consistently reinforced the Centre’s reputation for quality, consistency, and adherence to international best practices.
Building on this strong foundation, the UK Nautical Institute has now licensed the Centre to deliver key Dynamic Positioning (DP) programmes, including Dynamic Positioning Induction, Dynamic Positioning Simulator, Dynamic Revalidation, and Dynamic Vessel Maintenance Revalidation courses.
With this accreditation, the Maritime Centre of Excellence stands among a select group of institutions globally and is currently the only institute in West Africa with this level of Nautical Institute accreditation for Dynamic Positioning training.
Delivering World-Class Maritime Training
The Centre’s expanding portfolio of courses continues to position it as a premier destination for maritime professional development. In addition to Dynamic Positioning programmes, the MCOE delivers a range of specialised courses accredited by the UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA), widely regarded as the gold standard in maritime training worldwide.
These include programmes in Gas Tanker Operations, Human Element Leadership and Management, Electronic Chart Display and Information Systems (ECDIS), and High Voltage Training at both operational and management levels.
The combination of internationally recognised accreditations, advanced training technology, and highly skilled instructors has enabled the Centre to produce maritime professionals capable of competing successfully in the global maritime labour market.
Strengthening Nigeria’s Position in the Global Maritime Industry
According to Ahmed, the significance of the certification extends far beyond institutional recognition. “Certification by globally respected bodies affirms that the standard of training and expertise developed here in Nigeria can compete with the best anywhere in the world,” he said.
First, it enhances Nigeria’s standing within the global maritime community by demonstrating that world-class maritime training can be successfully delivered within the country. The endorsement by globally respected organisations affirms that the standards of training and expertise being developed in Nigeria are comparable to those obtainable anywhere in the world.
Second, it significantly improves the employability and mobility of Nigerian maritime professionals. With internationally recognised certifications, Nigerian seafarers are better positioned to access opportunities on international fleets, offshore operations, and specialised maritime projects across the globe.
Third, the achievement reinforces NSML’s commitment to local capacity development. Rather than relying heavily on foreign institutions for specialised maritime training, Nigerian professionals can now access globally accredited programmes at home, reducing costs while strengthening indigenous capability.
The certification also contributes to improved safety, professionalism, and operational readiness within the maritime sector. Given the highly technical nature of maritime operations, continuous learning and competence development remain critical. The standards maintained by the MCOE ensure that graduates possess the knowledge, discipline, and technical skills required to perform safely and effectively in demanding maritime environments.
Building the Next Generation of Nigerian Seafarers
One of the Centre’s most impactful initiatives is its Seafarers Continuous Development Programme (SCDP), designed to bridge the gap between classroom education and practical sea-going experience.
Beyond delivering maritime courses, the MCOE provides sea-time opportunities, consultancy services, and support for obtaining Certificates of Competency (CoC), enabling Nigerian seafarers to qualify for international maritime careers.
To date, 225 cadets have completed sea-time training through the programme, while an additional 54 cadets are currently undergoing training either at maritime colleges or onboard vessels. These cadets are progressing toward obtaining internationally recognised Certificates of Competency through partnerships with key stakeholders, including the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) and the Maritime Academy of Nigeria, Oron.
The programme serves both individuals and institutional partners, creating a clear pathway from maritime education to professional practice while helping Nigeria contribute meaningfully to the global demand for qualified seafarers.
For NSML, the initiative also supports its strategic objective of maintaining a high level of Nigerian participation onboard vessels under its management, reinforcing the broader national agenda of local content development.
Beyond Training: Maritime Research and Consultancy Leadership
The Maritime Centre of Excellence is more than a training institution. It also serves as a hub for maritime intelligence, research, and consultancy services.
Drawing on NSML’s extensive operational expertise, the Centre provides support for a wide range of maritime projects, including shipbuilding supervision, commercial evaluations, vessel inspections, and dry-docking supervision.
With proven experience spanning the entire vessel lifecycle—from keel laying and construction supervision to vessel delivery and management—the Centre has established itself as a trusted partner for maritime stakeholders seeking technical excellence and operational efficiency.
Through these services, NSML continues to contribute valuable expertise that supports the growth and sustainability of Nigeria’s maritime ecosystem.
Investing in the Future of Maritime Development
While celebrating the latest achievement, Ahmed emphasised that the certification is the result of deliberate and sustained investments in infrastructure, curriculum development, instructor capability, and robust quality assurance systems.
“Our goal has always been clear—to build not just a training institution, but a true Centre of Excellence,” he stated.
Looking ahead, NSML is already preparing for the next phase of growth. With support from the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB), the Maritime Centre of Excellence has commenced steps toward a major facility expansion project.
The expansion is expected to increase training capacity, introduce additional specialised programmes, enhance learning facilities, and enable the Centre to serve a larger number of participants from Nigeria, West Africa, and beyond.
The long-term vision is to create an even larger and better-equipped maritime institution capable of delivering greater value to customers while supporting the continued growth of Nigeria’s maritime industry and blue economy.
A Vision Anchored on Global Competitiveness
The certification by the UK Nautical Institute represents more than an institutional achievement; it is a powerful statement about Nigeria’s growing capability to compete in a highly specialised global industry.
As the Maritime Centre of Excellence continues to expand its training, research, consultancy, and capacity-building initiatives, it is helping shape a future in which Nigerian maritime professionals are recognised worldwide for their competence, professionalism, and readiness to meet international standards.
For NSML, the journey does not end with accreditation. Rather, it marks the beginning of a new chapter, one defined by innovation, continuous improvement, and an unwavering commitment to developing a maritime institution that Nigeria can proudly call its own and that the global maritime community respects as a true centre of excellence.
