Nigeria’s insurance industry must translate fresh capital and digital innovation into accessible products and scalable business models to achieve its next phase of growth, Andela and Flutterwave co-founder Iyinoluwa Aboyeji has said ahead of the fifth edition of Insurance Meets Tech (IMT).
Aboyeji, who is also the founding partner of Future Africa, will headline IMT 5.0, scheduled for Friday, November 20, 2026, at the Balmoral Event Centre, Sheraton Hotel, Ikeja, Lagos.
He will deliver a presentation titled “Capital, Code and the Race to Nigeria’s First Insurance Unicorn,” examining how stronger capitalisation and scalable technology could accelerate insurance adoption and create the conditions for a Nigerian insurance company to attain unicorn status.
His participation comes as the industry navigates a new phase of growth following recapitalisation and the implementation of the Nigerian Insurance Industry Reform Act (NIIRA).
While stronger balance sheets are expected to improve insurers’ capacity, the sector faces mounting pressure to convert fresh investments into sustainable growth and make insurance more accessible to Nigerians.
The challenge, therefore, extends beyond raising capital to developing products that fit seamlessly into consumers’ everyday digital experiences and platforms they already trust.
Aboyeji’s experience building technology businesses and investing in emerging African ventures is expected to provide a perspective on how insurers can bridge that gap.
Through his involvement in the creation of Andela and Flutterwave, two of Africa’s technology unicorns, and his investment activities at Future Africa, he brings experience spanning entrepreneurship, capital deployment and business expansion.
Speaking on the choice of headline speaker and topic, Odion Aleobua, convener of Insurance Meets Tech (IMT), said, “Nigeria has already built billion-dollar companies in payments and in talent, while insurance is still waiting for its breakout moment. This is the kind of trailblazing conversation we seek to have at Insurance Meets Tech.
“Iyin has built two of those companies and now backs the next generation of founders, so he sees this question from both sides of the table. He is the right person to set the tone for this conversation at IMT 5.0.”
The organisers said the session would explore what it would take to replicate the scale achieved in Nigeria’s payments and technology sectors within insurance, particularly as investors and shareholders seek returns on newly committed capital.
For insurers, the task is to combine financial capacity with technology-driven distribution, customer trust and products that respond to the needs of a broader market. For consumers, expectations are increasingly shaped by digital services that offer convenience, speed and accessibility.
Aboyeji said the industry already has two critical ingredients for transformation: capital and technology, adding that product design and distribution would be central to unlocking the sector’s potential.
Commenting on his participation, Mr. Aboyeji said, “Insurers now have the capital, and the technology to reach customers at scale is already here. What remains is building products that live inside platforms people trust. That is how the first insurance unicorn gets built. I look forward to making that case at IMT 5.0 to executives, founders, regulators, investors and policymakers from the insurance and technology sectors.”
The fifth edition, themed “Building Insurance That Connects”, will bring together stakeholders across insurance and technology to examine how stronger connections between people, capital and digital platforms can expand the industry’s reach and create new growth opportunities.
According to the organisers, the theme reflects their conviction that the future belongs to institutions capable of building ecosystems that connect people with capital, foster trust and unlock opportunities at scale.
The event is expected to provide a platform for executives, technology founders, regulators, investors and policymakers to discuss practical approaches to innovation and the development of a more accessible, connected and growth-oriented insurance industry.
