The Executive Mayor of Umunneochi Local Government Area, Chief Sunny Afurobi, has congratulated the government and people of Abia State on the 35th anniversary of the state’s creation, describing the milestone as an opportunity to reflect on its journey and renew the push for greater development.
Afurobi, in a goodwill message marking the anniversary, said Abia’s 35-year history had been defined by resilience, enterprise, innovation and the determination of its people to overcome challenges and create opportunities.
According to him, the anniversary should go beyond celebrating the past and serve as a moment to strengthen the collective resolve to build a more prosperous and inclusive state.
“This anniversary is more than a celebration of the past; it is an opportunity to appreciate the journey so far and renew our collective commitment to building a greater Abia,” he said.
The Umunneochi mayor acknowledged the contributions of successive generations of Abians, including past leaders, public servants, entrepreneurs, farmers, artisans, professionals, youths and women, to the growth and development of the state.
He particularly highlighted the entrepreneurial spirit and ingenuity of Abians, noting that from Aba’s commercial and industrial hub to communities across Abia North, Abia Central and Abia South, the people had continued to demonstrate “the strength, creativity and courage” for which the state is known.
Looking ahead, Afurobi called for greater emphasis on good governance, infrastructure development, economic opportunities, security, education and sustainable development.
He said these areas must remain central to the state’s development agenda as Abia enters another phase of its history.
“As we celebrate 35 years of Abia State, we look forward with renewed hope, unity and determination,” Afurobi stated, stressing that collective action remained critical to achieving a better future for the state.
On behalf of the people of Umunneochi LGA, the mayor extended his felicitations to the Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, the government and people of the state, as well as Abians living in Nigeria and abroad.
He expressed optimism that the coming years would usher in “greater prosperity, peace, unity, development and opportunities for every citizen.”
Afurobi urged Abians to remain united in purpose as the state moves into the next chapter of its development, encapsulating his message in the anniversary theme: “Abia at 35 — Resilient in Spirit, United in Purpose, and Rising in Progress.”
He wished Abia State a happy 35th anniversary and prayed for the continued progress and prosperity of the state and its people.
