Telecom service providers in Nigeria under the umbrella of the Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON) have attributed the challenges being faced by telecom subscribers in accessing data services as well as low internet speed to the impact of multiple damages to the international undersea cables across East and West Africa coastline.

ALTON said in a joint statement signed by its Chairman, Engr. Gbenga Adebayo, and Executive Secretary, Gbolahan Awonuga, and made available to Digital TimesNG Thursday night that the multiple damages occurred sometime on Thursday, March 14, 2024, outside the shores of Nigeria.

“This unfortunate development has impacted Data and Internet service delivery by some of our members. We highly regret any inconveniences caused by the damage to the submarine fibre optics cable in the international waterways,” ALTON said in the statement.

ALTON assured users of communication services that the repair process is ongoing by the responsible international service providers and services should be fully resolved soonest.

“On behalf of our affected members, we offer our apologies for all inconveniences arising from the impact of the damage and resulting outage,” ALTON stated and sought the continuous understanding of Nigerian telecom services users.
