The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced plans to temporarily close the runway of Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport, Owerri, Imo State, for about 25 days to facilitate essential rehabilitation and expansion works.
The closure is tentatively scheduled to commence on October 20, 2026, although FAAN said the date remains subject to final confirmation.
According to the Authority, the intervention has become necessary following the deterioration of portions of the runway, with potholes and extensive surface cracks reportedly worsened by recent heavy rainfall.
The planned rehabilitation will involve pavement repairs, treatment of cracks and resurfacing of affected sections of the runway as part of efforts to restore it to a safer operational condition.
FAAN said the works are also being undertaken ahead of the anticipated increase in passenger and flight traffic during the Christmas travel season.
Beyond repairs, the project will include an extension of the runway to enable the airport accommodate wide-body aircraft as air traffic to the South-East region continues to grow.
The Authority said the expansion was aimed at improving the airport’s operational capacity, enhancing passenger comfort and facilitating a more seamless travel experience for travellers using the facility.
FAAN advised passengers planning to travel through Owerri during the proposed closure period to maintain contact with their respective airlines for updates on flight schedules and possible alternative travel arrangements.
The airport authority said it would continue consultations with relevant stakeholders and announce the confirmed closure and reopening dates once they are finalised.
FAAN appealed to passengers, airlines and other airport users for their understanding and cooperation, stressing that the intervention was part of its commitment to maintaining safe, efficient and reliable airport operations.
