News Highlights:

  • NITDA and IDCA have launched a three-year national digital infrastructure initiative aimed at transforming Nigeria into a fully integrated digital economy hub.
  • The initiative will establish the “Nigeria Digital Triangle” — a network of AI-enabled hyperscale data centres designed to boost data sovereignty, attract investments, and create jobs.

The Federal Government, through the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), has entered into a strategic partnership with the International Data Centre Authority (IDCA) to drive a large-scale digital infrastructure programme aimed at positioning Nigeria as a leading digital economy hub in Africa.

The initiative, unveiled in Abuja on May 12, 2026, is designed to establish an execution-driven and investment-focused framework that will accelerate digital transformation, strengthen data sovereignty, and attract long-term public and private sector investments into Nigeria’s technology ecosystem.

The partnership aligns with the Nigerian Sovereign Cloud initiative and seeks to integrate infrastructure deployment, regulatory standards, talent development, and investment mobilisation into a unified national digital economy platform.

At the centre of the programme is the proposed “Nigeria Digital Triangle (NDT)” — a network of strategically located hyperscale, AI-enabled data centre clusters expected to serve as the backbone of Nigeria’s emerging digital economy by hosting global cloud and enterprise workloads while anchoring large-scale investments.

The initiative is built around four major pillars: the development of a national digital economy masterplan with measurable milestones; deployment of hyperscale infrastructure through interconnected digital hubs; establishment of national digital standards aligned with global best practices; and a structured workforce development and education system to support long-term digital capacity building.

Speaking on the partnership, the Director General of NITDA, Kashifu Inuwa, described the initiative as a major step in Nigeria’s economic transformation agenda.

“This initiative represents a defining moment in Nigeria’s economic transformation, reaffirming the government’s commitment to advancing the Digital Economy and Data Sovereignty Agenda. By working with the leading experts of IDCA and members of the National Sovereign Cloud Initiative Technical Working Group as the most advanced and credible think tank, prioritising digital infrastructure, talent development, data sovereignty, artificial intelligence, and entrepreneurship, Nigeria is laying a strong foundation for sustainable infrastructure growth, job creation, global competitiveness, and innovation-driven, inclusive development,” he said.

Chairman of International Data Centre Authority, Mehdi Paryavi, said the initiative would strengthen Nigeria’s position in the global digital economy.

“Nigeria is the largest economy in Africa and has the potential to become larger and more impactful to the lives of the people of Africa and beyond. This is more than a national initiative – it is a platform for long-term economic value creation. By integrating digital infrastructure, standards, and talent, bundled with investments and the right policymaking, Nigeria is building a competitive advantage in the global digital economy,” he stated.

Also commenting, Roger Strukhoff said, “Nigeria is taking a decisive step toward becoming a regional digital powerhouse. IDCA is pleased to be fundamental to this historic economic evolution. This is a structured, investment-ready approach that aligns strategy with execution and global best practices.”

Similarly, Solomon Edun noted that years of collaboration had culminated in the launch of the programme.

“IDCA and Nigeria have worked for years to reach this point. This is a historic moment, and the program is designed to translate vision into measurable outcomes. By focusing on infrastructure deployment, investment attraction, and skills development, we are enabling a scalable and sustainable digital ecosystem,” he said.

On the regulatory dimension of the initiative, Barrister Emmanuel Edet stressed the importance of nationally endorsed standards and governance frameworks.

“The development of nationally endorsed standards, implemented in parallel with enabling physical infrastructure, is fundamental to ensuring regulatory consistency, data security, and long-term sustainability. This collaborative initiative between Nigeria and the International Data Centre Authority establishes the requisite technical benchmarks and strategic governance framework to support effective,” he said.

According to the partners, the initiative will be implemented over three years with clearly defined milestones and coordinated engagement involving government institutions, private sector players, and international stakeholders.

The partnership further underscores Nigeria’s commitment to using digital infrastructure as a catalyst for economic diversification, innovation, job creation, and deeper global integration.
