- Anambra State Government launched State-wide crackdown on Illegal ISPs
- Initiative aligns with Gov Soludo’s commitment to a regulated digital ecosystem
The Anambra State Government has launched a targeted crackdown on unauthorized Internet Service Providers (ISPs) operating within the state.
This initiative is being jointly driven by the Anambra State Physical Planning Board (ANSPPB) and the Anambra State ICT Agency in response to growing concerns over illegal infrastructure deployment and the degradation of the environment.
In a joint statement issued by Barr. Chike Maduekwe, Executive Chairman/Managing Director of ANSPPB, and Chukwuemeka Fred Agbata (CFA), Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of the Anambra State ICT Agency, the government noted that the action was prompted by numerous reports of unauthorized road and sidewalk excavations, as well as the indiscriminate erection of poles that are defacing the urban landscape.
Digital TimesNG understands that subsequent investigations have revealed that several ISPs are operating without obtaining the necessary approvals or submitting their deployment plans to the appropriate authorities.
These illegal activities are not only a threat to public safety and infrastructure but also create vulnerabilities such as data breaches and substandard service delivery in addition to placing compliant ISPs—those duly registered with the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC)—at a disadvantage by encouraging unfair competition.
The crackdown, Digital TimesNG further learnt, aims to cleanse Anambra’s digital environment and ensure that only certified and properly registered ISPs are allowed to operate, a move that aligns with the broader vision of the Soludo-led administration to encourage responsible technology adoption for the benefit of all residents.
Encouraging community involvement, the government has provided a hotline—02014143039—for residents to report any suspicious or unauthorized ISP activity.
Speaking on the matter, Barr. Chike Maduekwe, Executive Chairman/Managing Director of ANSPPB, clarified the intent behind the initiative: “This isn’t about shutting anyone out. It’s about ensuring everyone plays by the rules. If you want to offer internet services in Anambra, go through the proper channels. We will support those doing the right thing, but we will not fold our arms and watch people cut corners.”
Also addressing the issue, Chukwuemeka Fred Agbata (CFA), Managing Director/CEO of the Anambra State ICT Agency, stressed the importance of coordinated regulation: “The Internet is no longer a luxury, it’s a necessity. Mr Governor announced and implemented zero Right of Way policy as a way of encouraging more players and deepening access.
“However, it is important to state that the first point of call for any interested player are the relevant agencies so that the State is aware of what is being deployed. This is because our people deserve services from providers they can trust. We are committed to protecting our citizens while enabling fair competition in the tech ecosystem.”
With this action, the Anambra State Government reaffirms its commitment to fostering a safe, equitable, and well-regulated digital economy, with the goal of ensuring that residents enjoy dependable internet services without the risk of exploitation or compromised infrastructure.
