Nigeria has taken a major step in fortifying its digital infrastructure with the official unveiling of Domain Name System Security Extensions (DNSSEC) on the country’s .ng domain, a move expected to significantly enhance online trust, cybersecurity resilience, and the growth of the digital economy.
The deployment, carried out by the Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NiRA), marks a strategic shift in safeguarding Nigeria’s internet ecosystem against increasingly sophisticated cyber threats.
With this rollout, Nigeria joins a growing list of nations adopting advanced protocols to secure their national domain space and protect users from malicious online activities.
DNSSEC is widely regarded as a critical layer of internet security, designed to prevent cyber-attacks that redirect users to fraudulent or compromised websites.
By introducing cryptographic authentication into the Domain Name System (DNS), the protocol ensures that users accessing .ng domains are connected to legitimate and verified destinations.
Speaking at the unveiling, NiRA’s President, Adesola Akinsanya, described the development as a watershed moment for the country’s digital landscape.
“The successful deployment and unveiling of DNSSEC on the .ng domain represents a defining moment for Nigeria’s internet ecosystem. As more critical services move online, we must provide a secure and trusted digital environment for citizens, businesses, and government. This milestone reflects our commitment to global best practices and to building a resilient digital future for Nigeria.”
Beyond its technical significance, the rollout underscores a broader national ambition to deepen digital trust and stimulate economic growth. According to NiRA, strengthening the integrity of the domain name system will create a more conducive environment for innovation, investment, and the expansion of digital services.
“A secure domain name system is fundamental to the growth of the digital economy. By strengthening trust in the .ng namespace, we are creating an enabling environment for innovation, investment, and digital services to thrive within Nigeria and beyond,” the President added.
The initiative is expected to have far-reaching benefits across key sectors such as financial services, telecommunications, e-commerce, and government platforms, industries that are heavily reliant on secure digital infrastructure.
Institutions regulated by bodies such as the Central Bank of Nigeria and the Nigerian Communications Commission are particularly well-positioned to benefit from enhanced protection against threats, including phishing, spoofing, and data interception.
The deployment also aligns with broader national digital transformation and cybersecurity strategies championed by agencies such as the National Information Technology Development Agency and the Office of the National Security Adviser, reinforcing Nigeria’s standing as an emerging digital economy.
NiRA confirmed that the DNSSEC implementation has been completed, with the .ng zone fully signed and currently undergoing a monitoring phase to ensure system stability and optimal performance. A phased rollout will follow, enabling accredited registrars and domain owners to adopt DNSSEC for their individual domains.
NiRA’s Chief Operating Officer, Mrs. Seyi Onasanya, highlighted the collaborative effort behind the project: “This deployment is the result of careful planning, technical expertise, and strong collaboration across the ecosystem. While the .ng zone has now been securely signed, our focus is on ensuring a smooth rollout and driving adoption among registrars and domain owners.”
NiRA is now urging organisations, particularly banks, fintech firms, telecom providers, government agencies, and e-commerce platforms, to integrate DNSSEC into their cybersecurity frameworks to strengthen protection and boost user confidence.
“By strengthening trust and security in Nigeria’s online environment, DNSSEC will play a vital role in boosting confidence in digital services, supporting e-commerce growth, and accelerating the expansion of Nigeria’s digital economy.
“We also encourage businesses and individuals to embrace the .ng domain as a secure and trusted digital identity, reinforcing Nigeria’s presence and participation in the global digital landscape,” the COO stated.
Emphasising the broader vision behind the initiative, the COO concluded: “This unveiling is not just about technology; it is about building trust in Nigeria’s digital future.
