Nigeria once again came tops at the global stage, affirming its leadership in using technology to promote transparency, accountability, and citizen participation in governance.

At the recently concluded 2025 Open Government Partnership (OGP) Global Summit held in Spain, Nigeria emerged as a standout performer, clinching two prestigious international awards that underscore its growing reputation as a trailblazer in digital governance.

The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), in collaboration with civil society organization Dataphyte, led the country’s award-winning initiatives that earned the Regional Award for Africa and the Middle East, a recognition of Nigeria’s commitment to advancing Open Digital Governance across the region.

Nigeria went further to make history by winning the global Thematic Award in the Digital Governance category, emerging overall winner from among 160 commitments submitted by 42 participating countries.

These twin recognitions highlight NITDA’s unwavering dedication to building an inclusive, citizen-centered digital ecosystem, as well as the success of Nigeria’s collaborative model that bridges government and civil society.

Through initiatives rooted in openness, innovation, and data-driven policymaking, Nigeria continues to demonstrate how digital transformation can strengthen accountability and public trust in governance.

This milestone follows Nigeria’s outstanding participation and the submission of strategic commitments on digital governance, showcasing groundbreaking policies, platforms, and partnerships aimed at making governance more participatory and technology-driven.

The commitments reflect the strategic framework of Nigeria’s digital transformation agenda, built on transparency, accessibility, and inclusiveness, and championed by NITDA under the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy.

With these global honours, Nigeria has reaffirmed its status not only as a continental leader but also as a key voice shaping the future of open and digital governance worldwide.

The awards stand as both validation of progress made and motivation to sustain efforts in deepening citizen engagement, promoting data openness, and strengthening accountability through innovative technology solutions.
